L’Atlas – Transversal – Wunderkammern – Roma

Wunderkammern is proud to present Transversal, the first solo show in Italy by the French artist L’Atlas. The opening will be on Saturday 22nd November, 7pm.
L’Atlas (1978, lives and works in Paris) is one of the most internationally recognized figures of Urban Art, consecrated by prestigious institutions such as the Centre Pompidou, the Palais de Tokyo, the Fondation Cartier and the Grand Palais in Paris.
The artist began his journey in the 90s through graffiti, taking the name of the Greek titan Atlas to reflect his global dimension. After spending an extended period between Morocco, Egypt and Syria where he studied with masters of all types of calligraphy, he came to create his own personal typography, which – thanks to the combination of many influences and cultures – aspires to become a universal script. The artist’s references span from archaeology to geography, from astronomy to Greek mythology, from Eastern philosophy to urban architecture. L’Atlas favors geometric abstraction, with direct references to Kinetic Art, Land Art and Optical Art. His typographic, almost abstract pieces create labyrinths and compasses that stand out in public spaces, at times the result of collective performances.
The exhibition “transversally” highlights the artist’s production, from his pieces that focus on reworked calligraphies to his newer works, where the handwriting is either barely visible or completely disappears to the point of geometric abstraction. In L’Atlas’s works the signs, planes, diagonals, transversal lines, and points of intersection give shape to a graphic representation of the universe; a universe that, today, is infinite and immeasurable. This abstract depiction, composed of formulas and numbers, interprets mathematical foundations in a visual light. In this sense, the works of L’Atlas indulge man’s constant need to attach a visual image to what is infinite.
The artist will create a new series of works specifically for Transversal on glass and wood. At the exhibition prints and artworks in acrylic, aerosol and lacquer, on both canvas and wood, will also be presented. Before the opening, L’Atlas will create an outdoor installation in Rome. The author of the critical essay of Transversal is Lucie Touya (L’agence à Paris).
The artist will be present at the opening. The limited edition, numbered and signed by the artist, of the book Diagonals, produced by Le Grand Jeu, with a critical essay by Christian Omodeo (Ed. Atelier RLD) will be presented at this occasion.
The event is organised with the support of of Rome’s 5th District, of Nuovi Mecenati and in collaboration with the Institut Français Italia and the Institut Français – Centre Saint-Louis.
Transversal is part of Wunderkammern’s new artistic series Limitless, which was inaugurated with the Spanish artist Sam3.The project will see hosted in the gallery other important players on the international Urban Art scene: Sten&Lex (Italy), Alexey Luka (Russia) and Jacopo Ceccarelli a.k.a. 2501 (Italy). The project explores the concept of limitation in its possible shapes and manifestations, designating Art as the preferred means of overcoming barriers that we are subjected to on a daily basis, and for reflecting on limitless reality.

Wunderkammern è lieta di presentare Transversal, la prima mostra personale in Italia dell’artista francese L’Atlas. Il vernissage sarà sabato 22 novembre, ore 19.
L’Atlas (1978, vive e lavora a Parigi) è una delle figure più riconosciute dell’Urban Art a livello internazionale, già consacrato da prestigiose istituzioni come il Centre Pompidou, il Palais de Tokyo, la Fondation Cartier e il Grand Palais a Parigi.
L’artista inizia il suo percorso negli anni ’90 con i graffiti, prendendo il nome dal titano greco Atlante per la sua dimensione globale. Dopo un lungo viaggio tra Marocco, Egitto e Siria, dove studia dai maestri diversi tipi di calligrafia, arriva all’ideazione di una propria personale tipografia, che grazie all’unione di differenti influenze e culture ambisce a diventare una scrittura universale. I riferimenti dell’artista vanno dall’archeologia alla geografia, dall’astronomia alla mitologia greca, dalla filosofia orientale all’architettura urbana. L’Atlas tende all’astrazione geometrica, con diretti richiami all’Arte Cinetica, alla Land Art e alla Optical Art. I suoi interventi tipografici e quasi astratti creano labirinti e bussole che si stagliano nello spazio pubblico, talvolta frutto di performances collettive.
La mostra percorre “trasversalmente” la produzione dell’artista, dalle opere incentrate sulle rielaborazioni calligrafiche fino ai suoi lavori più recenti, dove la grafia è appena percepibile oppure scompare totalmente raggiungendo l’astrazione geometrica. Nelle opere di L’Atlas i segni, piani, diagonali, linee trasversali e punti di intersezione danno forma a una rappresentazione grafica dell’universo; un universo che si rivela oggi infinito e non misurabile. Questa figurazione astratta, fatta di formule e numeri, interpreta i fondamenti matematici in chiave visiva. In questo senso, i lavori di L’Atlas assecondano il costante bisogno dell’uomo di attribuire un’immagine all’infinito.
L’artista produrrà appositamente per Transversal una nuova serie di opere su vetro e su legno. In mostra saranno inoltre presentate delle stampe, delle opere in acrilico, aerosol e lacca sia su tela che su legno. Prima dell’inaugurazione della mostra, L’Atlas realizzerà un intervento nello spazio pubblico a Roma. Il testo critico di Transversal è curato da Lucie Touya (L’agence à Paris).
L’artista sarà presente in occasione del vernissage. Durante l’opening sarà presentata l’edizione limitata, numerata e firmata dall’artista del libro Diagonals, prodotto da Le Grand Jeu, con testo critico di Christian Omodeo (Ed. Atelier R.L.D).
L’evento è organizzato con il supporto di Municipio Roma 5, di Nuovi Mecenati e in collaborazione con Institut Français Italia e Institut Français – Centre Saint-Louis.
La mostra Transversal fa parte del nuovo progetto artistico di Wunderkammern, Limitless, già iniziato con l’artista spagnolo Sam3. Il progetto proseguirà portando in galleria altri importanti artisti della scena internazionale della Urban Art: Sten&Lex (Italia), Alexey Luka (Russia) e Jacopo Ceccarelli a.k.a. 2501 (Italia). Il progetto esplora il concetto di limite nelle sue possibili forme e manifestazioni, designando l’Arte come il mezzo preferenziale per il superamento delle barriere a cui siamo quotidianamente sottoposti e per una riflessione sulla realtà illimitata.
