| La Galleria Patricia Armocida è lieta di annunciare la nuova mostra personale di Todd James, inaugurazione martedì 5 marzo 2024 ore 19. Per l’occasione saranno esposti quindici lavori inediti tra cui nove tele e sei gouaches su carta. Intitolata Musical Chairs, questa nuova esposizione si può considerare un ponte visivo tra i dipinti a pastello ad olio, esposti a Copenhagen e New York nel 2023, e le sue distintive tele ad acrilico delle mostre precedenti. Combinando disegno e pittura, questa nuova produzione di opere presenta un ulteriore sviluppo dello stile di Todd James, in cui l’intervento su tela accoglie il metodo e lo spirito degli originali gouaches e grafite su carta da lui realizzati. Le linee volutamente ruvide e nervose del bastoncino ad olio enfatizzano la perfezione delle campiture uniformi ad acrilico, ravvivando e umanizzando gli interni raffigurati. Il soggetto centrale in cui si muove James, lo vede oscillare fra i temi consolidati, mai abbandonati e rivisitati, che evocano il potere silenzioso e la bellezza del quotidiano: elementi d’interni domestici come tazze da caffè, rigogliose piante d’appartamento, posaceneri, telefoni analogici, gatti e il ricorrente gioco delle sedie che dà il titolo alla mostra, totem domestici che hanno popolato i lavori di Todd James negli ultimi due decenni. Gli interni, intrisi di un’atmosfera familiare e rassicurante per la loro umanità, si fondono nei mondi che James crea senza soluzione di continuità, combinando ed esponendo per la prima volta queste nuove cifre stilistiche e tecniche in Musical Chairs.BIO Todd James (New York, 1969 vive e lavora a New York) è un celebre artista newyorkese della generazione successiva a Jean-Michel Basquiat, Rammellzee e Kenny Scharf. Leader stilistico in molteplici medium per svariate decadi, l’opera di James è riconoscibile sin dai suoi esordi giovanili sotto lo pseudonimo REAS. James ha collaborato con artisti come Kaws, Barry McGee, ed ESPO aka Steve Powers, creando al contempo opere commerciali in collaborazione con Beastie Boys, Iggy Pop, Eminem, Pharrell Williams ed altre icone della cultura pop. James, insieme a Berry McGee ed ESPO, è co-creatore di Street Market, un’opera rimarcabile/di particolare importanza del movimento post-graffiti che ha debuttato a Deitch Projects a New York City nel 2000. Street Market è stata successivamente esposta al padiglione americano alla Biennale d’arte di Venezia nel 2001 e al Parco Museum di Tokyo. Una riedizione di Street Market è stata l’installazione centrale della mostra da record Art in the street al MOCA Museum di Los Angeles nel 2011. Nel 2015, James è stato scelto per la Biennale d’arte di Venezia. In Bridges Of Graffiti, una delle mostre ufficiali della Biennale del 2015, l’opera di James intitolata Vandal’s Bedroom riceve un grande successo e l’installazione si sposta successivamente a New York, Londra, Madrid, Copenhagen e Los Angeles. James continua a ricevere una crescente attenzione internazionale; negli ultimi anni è emerso come uno degli artisti centrali di Beyond the Streets, una mostra itinerante che incarna il crescente slancio globale dell’arte emersa al di fuori delle istituzioni tradizionali dell’arte, attualmente in mostra alla Saatchi Gallery di Londra. Entitled Musical Chairs, this new exhibition represents a visual bridge between James’s oil stick paintings exhibited in Copenhagen and New York in 2023, and his signature acrylic canvas paintings from past exhibitions. Combining drawing with painting, these new works represent a further evolution of the artist’s style, where the canvas iterations embrace the method and spirit of his gouache and graphite originals on paper. The intentionally rough, incisive lines of the oil sticks emphasize the perfection of the acrylic color fields, enlivening and humanizing the composition. The subject matter sees James bobbing in and out of many of his well-established themes, never abandoned but revisited: coffee cups, lush house plants, ashtrays, analog telephones, cats, and the eponymous chairs are household totems that have populated Todd James’s oeuvre for the last two decades and that evoke the silent power and beauty of the everyday. The interiors, imbued with a familiar atmosphere and reassuring with their humanity, merge into the worlds James creates seamlessly, combining and exhibiting, for the first time, these new styles and techniques in Musical Chairs.BIO Todd James (New York, 1969) lives and works in New York and is a celebrated artist from the generation following Jean-Michel Basquiat, Rammellzee, and Kenny Scharf. A style leader in multiple mediums over several decades, James’s work has been recognized since his teenage years, writing the moniker REAS. James has collaborated with artists such as Kaws, Barry McGee, and ESPO aka Steve Powers, and has created commercial works in collaboration with the Beastie Boys, Iggy Pop, Eminem, Pharrell Williams and other pop culture icons. James, along with Barry McGee and ESPO, is a co-creator of Street Market, a major work of the post-graffiti movement that debuted at Deitch Projects in New York City in 2000. Street Market was subsequently shown at the US Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2001 and at the Parco Museum in Tokyo. A re-creation of Street Market was the central installation of the LA MOCA’s record breaking Art in the Street exhibition in 2011. In 2015, James’s work was chosen for the Venice Biennale. In The Bridges Of Graffiti, one of the 2015 Biennale’s official exhibitions, James’s work, Vandal’s Bedroom, was exhibited to great acclaim and the installation subsequently traveled to New York, London, Madrid, Copenhagen, and Los Angeles. James continues to receive increasing international attention, in recent years emerging as one of the leading artists to take part in Beyond the Streets, a traveling exhibition which embodies the rising global momentum of art that emerged outside the traditional institutions of art, currently on view at Saatchi Gallery in London.
