WINNER OF ART FUTURES AWARD ANNOUNCED AT ART HK 12 – Hong Kong artist Lee Kit Wins US$25,000 Prize

ART HK 12 today announced Lee Kit, featured by Aike-Dellarco from Shanghai, as the winner of the 2012 ART FUTURES prize at an awards presentation held on-site at the Fair. The US$25,000 prize was awarded by an expert panel of judges.

The concept of his project, Something in My Hands (2012), intertwines the use of different art forms with the notions of daily life to build up an atmosphere and create a sense of feeling for his audience. His work blends a fresh attitude bringing real life elements in an abstract visual statement.

A key fixture on the international art calendar, ART HK 12 is the leading annual contemporary art fair in Asia. ART FUTURES is a section of the Fair showcasing emerging artists from new galleries around the world. This year, ART FUTURES presents 35 of the world’s most exciting young galleries, showcasing work by emerging artists from around the globe.

Galleries taking part in ART FUTURES from Europe and the Americas include Herald St from London; ltd los angeles from Los Angeles USA; and Mendes Wood from Sao Paulo.

Asian galleries in the strong line-up include AIKE-DELLARCO from Shanghai; Take Ninagawa from Tokyo and Saamlung from Hong Kong.

“A reduced number of spaces for ART FUTURES at ART HK 12, together with a broader age range of exhibiting galleries, extended to those that have been operating for less than 8 years, places a strengthened emphasis on quality and has led to the highest calibre of work being showcased this year,” explains Magnus Renfrew, Fair Director.

This year, the prize’s judging panel included Lars Nittve, Executive Director of M+, the contemporary art museum in Hong Kong’s soon-to-be launched US$2.1 billion West Kowloon Cultural District; Elaine Ng, Editor and Publisher of ArtAsiaPacific Magazine; Okwui Enwezor, Nigerian-born American curator, art critic, writer, poet, and educator specializing in art history.

ART HK 12, the fifth edition of the Hong Kong International Art Fair, sponsored by Deutsche Bank, opened to the public today and runs until 20 May at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. ART HK 12 features 266 galleries from 38 countries.
