| GIUSEPPE SCIORTINO | GIUSEPPE VASSALLO LUNATICO | LUNARE Inaugurazione Martedì 19 settembre ore 19 20 settembre – 10 novembre 2023ENGLISH TEXT BELOWLa Galleria Patricia Armocida di Milano è lieta di annunciare la doppia personale Lunatico | Lunare di Giuseppe Sciortino e Giuseppe Vassallo (Palermo, 1988 e 1990), a cura di Ilaria Introzzi, inaugurazione Martedì 19 settembre 2023, ore 19. La mostra pone al centro due artisti vicini e distanti al tempo stesso. Pittori accademici, anche in virtù del loro passato formativo e, al tempo stesso, indipendenti da ogni convenzione teorica, tecnica e formale, elaborano una pittura del tutto personale. Una dimensione altra eppure familiare, dove spazi e tempi apparentemente immaginari trovano la loro definizione e materia. Lunatico | Lunare è il manifesto, in nuce, dell’arte di entrambi fino a oggi, e una visione in divenire del suo futuro. Giuseppe Sciortino compone equilibri – squilibri prospettici nella serie dedicata alle miniature, in cui i soggetti non sono figure umane e/o della natura ma il (micro)spazio abituale. E, a un livello più intimo, il ricordo che è risultato su cartone, carta o tavola, ben visibile allo spettatore grazie a scelte cromatiche precise di simboli riconoscibili. Un espediente inconscio e totalmente casuale, è infatti l’esito di un’elaborazione interiore di situazioni comuni, che chiunque può vivere in un preciso momento: notare delle lenzuola sgualcite; osservare una semplice mattonella; vedere un fazzoletto sul pavimento. Gli spettatori della mostra vengono naturalmente indotti ad avvicinarsi per conoscerne il contenuto, mettendosi così nelle stesse condizioni dell’artista, nel momento esatto in cui le dipingeva: vedere l’immagine oltre la pittura. Oggetti diversi di porzioni di realtà. Cose senza senso ne valore apparente che incluse all’interno delle opere fungono da traccia, come frammenti di memorie: i significanti della sua arte sono visioni della vita di ciascuno. Diapositive, esposte evitando di proposito la scrittura di un racconto. Piuttosto, la casualità con cui sono installate, è cifra e lettura intrinseca dello stile ricercato di Sciortino. Di come le memorie possano affiorare istintivamente, senza un ordine preciso. Giuseppe Vassallo, guida l’ospite di Lunatico | Lunare in un percorso dove a colpire lo sguardo di ognuno sono dipinti dai quali emerge, sia a livello visivo che interiore, una polvere sottile, preziosa, testimone di uno scenario luminoso eppure intimo, in qualche modo segnato dal vivere, dove la natura si fonde idealmente con l’umano. L’artista porta così avanti la propria indagine autoriale che, oltre alla sua terra e alle sue passioni – dalle fotografie scattate con la macchina analogica e quelle d’epoca trovate nei mercatini dell’antiquariato, alla sua Motoguzzi con la quale viaggia per le coste palermitane – contribuisce alla creazione di un’umanità ritrovata nei lavori che dipinge. Immagini di figure immerse nell’acqua, di soggetti colti a riflettersi nell’elemento e paesaggi, perlopiù marini, fungono da occasione per una composizione – su tela o su tavola – realizzata partendo dall’esigenza di esprimersi attraverso un segno, quello della pittura. Gesti spontanei, con campiture talvolta monocromatiche talvolta a colori, punteggiate da particelle di luce in contrasto. Movimenti adattati di continuo al soggetto, nonostante rievochino la prima tecnica sperimentata da Vassallo: la scultura. Un metodo portato avanti negli anni in cui non aveva ancora eletto la pittura a vocazione principale. Gesti plastici di corpi e spazi influenzati dalla sua terra e dai giovani artisti palermitani con cui è cresciuto nel periodo dell’Accademia fino a oggi. Academic artists, also due to their training, yet, at the same time, free from any theoretical, technical, and formal conventions, they create highly personal works. A different yet familiar dimension where seemingly imaginary spaces and eras find their definition and essence. Lunatico | Lunare is a manifesto, in short, of their artwork thus far and a vision for its evolution in the future.In the series dedicated to miniatures, Giuseppe Sciortino plays with perspective balance-imbalance and the subjects are not human or natural figures, but rather everyday (micro)settings. And, on a more intimate level, the memory left on cardboard, paper, or panel, is clearly visible to spectators thanks to precise chromatic choices of recognizable symbols. An unconscious and entirely chance expedient, the result of an internal processing of ordinary situations that anyone can experience at any moment: noticing wrinkled sheets; looking at a simple tile; seeing a tissue on the floor. Spectators are naturally prompted to move closer to examine the content, hence assuming the same position of the artist when he was painting: seeing the image beyond the painting. Different objects from segments of reality. Things without apparent meaning or value, which, included within the artwork, act as fragments of memories: the signifiers of his artwork are visions of everyone’s lives. Diapositives on display, deliberately avoiding the writing of a story. Instead, the casualness with which they’re installed is the intrinsic cipher and interpretation of Sciortino’s refined style. Of how memories can instinctively surface in no particular order.Giuseppe Vassallo guides Lunatico | Lunare visitors on a journey where what catches the eye most are the paintings from which a fine, precious dust emerges, both visually and internally, a testament to a luminous yet intimate scenario, marked by life in some way, where nature ideally merges with humankind. Thus the artist conducts his own authorial research which, in addition to his homeland and his passions- photos shot with analog cameras and vintage photos found at flea markets, his Motoguzzi with which he travels along the coasts of Palermo – contributes to the creation of the humanity in his artworks. Images of figures immersed in water, subjects looking at their reflections in the element, and landscapes, mainly seascapes, serve as the occasion for a composition – on canvas or panel- born of the need to express oneself through a sign, that of painting. Spontaneous gestures, backgrounds that are monochrome or colored, speckled with contrasting particles of light. Movements adapted to the subject, though reminiscent of the first technique Vassallo experimented with: sculpture. A method developed over the years when he had not yet chosen painting as his main vocation. Plastic gestures of bodies and spaces influenced by his homeland and the young artists of Palermo with whom he grew up with during his time at the Art Academy up to the present. Memories that become artistic medium and autobiography for the observer. |
